Amateur Electricans

We often find that mobile homeowners try to make their own electrical repairs. We regularly find electrical outlets that don’t work, many extension cords running all around the mobile home, wires hanging from electrical outlets on the ceiling, and many other very “amateur-like” electrical repair work.

Tip: It is smart to hire Integrity Leveling to address electrical problems. We regularly find do-it-yourself (DIY) wiring mistakes. If they are not corrected, they can cause short circuits, shocks and electrical fires.

The most common DIY mistakes we find in mobile homes include:

  • Making connections without an electrical box is very dangerous. The connection box is one line of defense from electrical fires.
  • Wires coming out of an electrical box are cut too short. Short wires make it hard to make the connection which can be dangerous.
  • Plastic-sheathed cables are vulnerable when placed over or under wall or ceiling framing. The sheath can be frayed causing shorts.
  • Loosely connected switches or outlets look bad and are dangerous. When they move they cause wires to loosen from connections. When wires get loose, they can overheat and arc creating an electrical fire.
  • A two-prong outlet replaced with a three-prong outlet without a ground wire is dangerous.
  • Electrical boxes should never be mounted behind the wall surface if the wall is composed of combustible material. Recessed boxes against wood present an electrical fire hazard.
